The number of IT specialists in Ukraine is growing every year, but many are leaving

Over the year, the number of IT specialists in Ukraine registered as entrepreneurs grew by 23% and reached 154 thousand people (125 thousand a year earlier). This is reported by the portal DOU with reference to the Ministry of Justice statistics on IT sole proprietorships.

It is noted that growth occurred in all types of activities and in almost all regions of the country. However, more than half of the new IT sole proprietorships are in the Kyiv, Kharkiv, and Lviv regions.

The main type of activity for IT sole proprietorships remains computer programming - 102 thousand specialists are registered under this code.

Also popular are information technology consulting (24 thousand) and data processing (almost 19 thousand). The latter grew by almost a quarter over the year.

Last year, the number of IT specialists grew in all regions of the country, with the exception of Crimea (the number of IT specialists registered there decreased by 1% over the year).

The leaders in growth rates in 2018 were small regions. The largest increase in the number of IT sole proprietorships was recorded in the Cherkasy, Poltava, and Khmelnytskyi regions, where the number of registered IT specialists increased by a third (28%).

The smallest increase in the number of IT specialists, as expected, occurred in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions, although even they, despite the difficult military-political situation, showed growth (by 12% and 8%, respectively).

Also, growth rates were lower than in other regions in the Kherson (16%), Mykolaiv (17%), and Zakarpattia (18%) regions.

Despite very different growth rates of IT specialists in different regions, the ranking of regions by the number of IT specialists has almost not changed: only the Poltava region managed to overtake the Zhytomyr region in the number of IT sole proprietorships, and the Rivne region overtook the Kherson region.

Kyiv and the Kyiv region remain the undisputed leader in the number of IT specialists — almost 30% of all IT sole proprietorships are registered here.

The Kharkiv region remains in second place (14% of all IT specialists are registered there). In third place, as a year ago, is the Lviv region (10%).

At the same time, 75% of IT specialists are registered in large cities with a population of more than 100 thousand inhabitants (in fact, this is the level of regional centers).

The share of women among IT specialists is growing, albeit very slowly: last year, 24% of IT sole proprietorships were women, and this year it is 25%.

Note that at the end of 2018, the IT industry in Ukraine took second place in terms of export volume, selling 4.5 billion dollars worth of products abroad.
