GameHub Workshop, ONPU, October 27, 2017

27.10.2017

ONPU_448On October 27, 2017, the Institute of Computer Systems (ICS) of the Odessa National Polytechnic University (ONPU) hosted the 1st day of the 17th regional scientific-practical conference in the field of computer sciences of the Odessa territorial branch of the Junior Academy of Sciences (JAS) – https: // www .facebook.com / groups / 1734832260086515 /

Traditionally, this day was dedicated to reviewing the achievements of the ONPU staff and students in creating methodological and software support for teaching schoolchildren and students in the field of computer sciences.
In room 409, more than 50 schoolchildren and teachers from schools in the districts of the Odessa region and the city of Odessa gathered.
Most of the presentations were related to the "Multimedia Systems, Educational and Game Programs" section. Since 2016, the work of this section has become an unofficial part of the Erasmus+ KA2 project "GameHub: University-Enterprise Cooperation in Game Industry in Ukraine"
Blazhko O.A., Deputy Director of the ICS, a member of the GameHub-ONPU team, spoke about the features of the project and the fact that today game development is ceasing to be part of only one JAS section, because for the successful implementation of a game, knowledge related to the following sections is required:
1) "Computer Systems and Networks" for using modern methods of human-computer interaction;
2) "Security of Information and Telecommunication Systems" for ensuring secure resource management in a game;
3) "Information Systems, Databases and Artificial Intelligence Systems" for creating multiplayer games and games in which a computer with artificial intelligence will act as a worthy opponent to the player;
4) "Programming Technologies (Applied and System Programming)" for quickly creating games that run fast on different computer devices;
5) "Internet Technologies and WEB Design" for creating Internet games with a design that is not inferior in ergonomics to the design of Desktop games.
Lugova T.A., Associate Professor of the Department of Document Science and Information Activity, also a member of the GameHub-ONPU team, continued the presentation with the basics of game system design, showing through many examples the importance of game design and the correct preparation of project documentation even before the start of game development using software technologies.
The next speaker was Antonyuk V.V., Senior Lecturer at the Department of Computer Intelligent Systems and Networks, also a member of the GameHub-ONPU team, with a presentation on creating casual (simple) games based on finite-state programming in the Unity 3D software environment, showing those present an original way of programming computer game mechanics.

Maslov O.V., Professor and Head of the Department of Physics, also a member of the GameHub-ONPU team, continued the presentation with the basics of modeling physical processes in Unity 3D, showing those present the possibilities of combining well-known physical experiments with virtual experiments on a model in a Unity 3D project. Shevchenko Ya. V., a 3rd-year student of group AS153, took an active part in the presentation and development of the model project.
The next speaker was Karlov A.S., a 5th-year student of group AS132, with a presentation on the basics of developing augmented reality applications in Unity 3D.
Lugovsky V.A., a 4th-year student of group AS142, continued the presentation with the basics of developing augmented reality applications using Microsoft Kinect sensors, showing those present the possibilities of creating multiplayer interaction systems using Unity 3D.
The series of presentations on the 1st day of the conference was concluded by a group presentation by Bulakh H.V., a 5th-year student of group AS132, Lugovsky V.A., a 4th-year student of group AS142, and Ivanchenko E.V., a 2nd-year student of group AP166 with a presentation on the use of OSVR virtual reality headsets, supplemented by a Leap Motion hand gesture recognition module.
It should be noted that the last two presentations were made possible thanks to the created GameLab laboratory, the equipment for which was purchased within the framework of the GameHub project. Geographically, the laboratory is located in room 910f of the Department of Computer Intelligent Systems and Networks, but it can be available for conducting classes and scientific research in the field of game development by ONPU teachers and students.
It is also necessary to note the long-term participation in the organization of the conference by the Odessa office of the product IT company Netcracker and its regional manager Oleksandr Hortovliuk.
Many presentations served as advertisements for the master classes that took place on the 2nd day of the conference, which will be described in detail in the next news article.
